After the exhilaration of your Introductory Flight, if you've now decided to become a pilot, your next step will be to obtain your pilot medical certification. In order to fly an aircraft solo (by yourself), pilots must obtain medical certification proving that they are in suitable physical condition. The extent of this certification (category) will depend on the licence or permit you are planning to obtain.
In Canada, there are three pilot Medical Categories:
| |
Category 1 Medical
| |
A Category 1 Medical Certification is required by all individuals who hold a Commercial Pilot Licence and work as commercial pilots. This medical exam is thorough and must be done by a Transport Canada approved physician. If you aspire to be a commercial pilot you will need to complete this medical certification prior to obtaining your commercial licence. |

Category 3 Medical
| |
A Category 3 Medical Certification is required for pilots who hold a Private Pilot Licence. This medical exam is not as thorough as a Category 1 but must still be completed by a Transport Canada approved physician. If your goal is to become a private pilot you will need to complete this medical certification prior to your first solo flight. |

Category 4 Medical
| |
A Category 4 Medical Certification is required for pilots who hold a Recreational Pilot Permit. This medical exam can be completed by your family physician who will simply complete a Self Declaration on your behalf. If your goal is to become a recreational pilot you will need to complete this medical certification prior to your first solo flight. |
